A Perfect Score: The Art Soul, and Business of a 21st-Century Winery Book Review
One of the things that I love the most about the wine industry is finding how someone got into the business of wine. I was recently sent a review copy of A Perfect Score: The Art , Soul, and Business of a 21st Century. The book weaves the personal adventures and wine business into the stories of Craig and Kathryn Hall, the proprietors of HALL and WALT wines.
The Halls purchased an 1885 winery located in the Napa Valley and now have been in the wine industry for twenty years. The couple have become a staple in Napa. They are known for fabulous wine and philanthropy to the community. I have yet to try their wines, but I’m not very curious to taste them, especially their red.
What I enjoyed about the book is that we get to hear stories from the both of them. We get to hear the good stuff and the difficulties. The format that the book is in isn’t for everyone. It does jump around a bit. Some of the chapters include: Jumping In, Your Friends Can Only Buy So Much, Dreaming Big, Negotiating Napa, and Delivering In A New Way.
For anyone who wants to get a peek into what it’s like to own a winery this is a good read. It’s not all unicorns and rainbows. Most people think the wine world is always glamorous. Making wine is a magickal art form. However, there are a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that can go into making a bottle of wine.
While it’s not a book that will change your life, but an interesting read if you are into wine.
