Ribera y Rueda Vintage Tasting: Spanish Reds & Whites

I had the pleasure getting up close and personal with some Spanish wines at a Ribera y Rueda Vintage Tasting. I have been turning up my exploration of Spanish wines since I will be going there on a press trip. It’s been fun and quite delicious to see what Spain has going on.

The Ribera y Rueda regions are both close to Madrid. You might be surprised to know that 68% of the wine that is drunk in Spain is red. Someone at the tasting even commented that when he throws parties at his house in Spain no one ever drinks the white wine. It’s about the reds!

The vintage tasting was led by Master Sommelier, Alexander LaPratt, who is the sommelier for the Ribera y Rueda campaign.

Some of the wines highlighted at the tasting were:

Marques de Caceres 2015

This wine is one that is good for every day, when you want to have a wine on the table, get this one.

Winemaker’s notes:

Vivid straw color. Fresh, clean and intense bouquet enlivened by notes of citrus fruit with a depth of pears and apples. Deliciously fresh and full in the mouth where racy, focused flavors deliver notes of minerals, lemon rind and green apples.

Castelo de Medina Verdejo 2014

Definitely one of my favorites during the tasting. I picked up some notes of floral and pineapple.  This would be a perfect selection for the spring and summer months.

Winemaker’s notes:

The wine is clean and bright, with pale yellow color with greenish hue.The nose is fine and elegant, with aromas of classic Verdejo as dill, fennel, anise, apple gain complexity with light toasted spices and notes of pastry that has yielded the barrel during their upbringing.

Emina Crianza Ribera Del Duero 2009 and Emina Crianza Ribera Del Duero 2010

The award winning Emina 2009 is a tempranillo that is sooo good! It’s a deep sexy red with notes of berries, cherries, and violets. It says baby come and get it in your glass. As for the Emina 2010 it has notes of fruit, smoke chocolate and licorice. The kind of wine that mixes great with meat.

Winemaker’s notes:

Deep cherry colour with purple glints, clean and bright On the nose it is very complex, excellent harmony in its aromas: ripe fruit, toasts, coffee. On the palate, it is powerful, round and well structured. Sweet polished tannins perfectly balanced with clean wood. Smooth and lingering finish.
